Foreign tourists were thought to be among the victims of the earthquake and subsequent tidal waves in south east Asia, but so far no Irish casualties have been reported.
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, said that the Department of Foreign Affairs and embassies in the region were doing everything possible to assist Irish people in the region and their families in Ireland during this difficult time.
The Department has issued three numbers for people concerned about relatives in the region.
They are 01 478 0822, 01 408 2308 and 01 408 2302.
Callers are advised lines may be busy and should try again later if they cannot get through.
It was not immediately clear how many of the dead were foreigners, but a Belgian and two Danes are among the 66 people killed on the Thai island resort of Phuket.
The region of south east Asia is said to attract tens of thousands of European, Russian and Israeli tourists at this time of year.
