US firm pulls out of Iraq contract

An American company has pulled out of a multi-million dollar contract to rebuild transportation infrastructure in Iraq.

The Virginia-based firm, Contrack International Incorporated, cited rising violence and associated security costs for withdrawing from a €325 million project.

The decision marks the first time a prime contractor has pulled out of an Iraqi rebuilding programme.

Pentagon spokesman, Lt Colonel Eric Schnaible, said the US Department of Defence would take over supervision of the project.
