UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on the UN Security Council to take decisions urgently to curb the escalating violence in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Mr Annan said the 15-member council should conduct a 'real re-assessment' of actions toward Sudan because the UN's current approach was not working.

Relief convoys are being attacked in Darfur, and peace talks in Nigeria have stalled, while nearly two million people have been forced to leave their homes.

The Africa Union is deploying monitors and troops but is still far short of the 3,300 personnel expected.
