Irish groups' concern at withdrawal from Sudan

Irish humanitarian groups in Sudan say they are gravely concerned at today's announcement by UK charity Save The Children that it is to pull out of the country due to the security situation.

Four of the charity's staff have been killed in the western Darfur region in the last two months, as fighting has increased dramatically.

Other aid agencies fear they too may have to leave due to security concerns and fear this would precipitate a disaster in the region.

Separately, peace talks between the Khartoum government, which is supported by the Janjaweed militia, and Darfur rebels were suspended today.

And the African Union force monitoring their ceasefire has suspended operations in south Darfur because its helicopter was fired on.

It is estimated that fighting has displaced more than two million of Darfur's African farmers, many of whom rely on humanitarian aid.
