More than 8,000 people were treated in Irish hospitals for deliberate self harm last year, according to the National Parasuicide Registry report.
The registry also said attempted suicides increased 3.6% last year.
Almost 3,000 people under the age of 25 were treated in hospital for self harm. The report found the greatest risk groups were 20 to 24 year old men and 15 to 19 year old women.
One in every 150 Irish adolescent girls was treated in hospital last year for deliberate self harm.
Figures released earlier this year showed that 444 people died as a result of suicide in 2003.
Three hundred and fifty eight of them were male, and over a quarter of them were aged between 15 and 24.
