The Environmental Protection Agency has said that drinking water quality in Ireland continues to improve both in public water supplies and group water schemes.
The conclusion is drawn in its latest national report on the management of water resources by local authorities.
However, the EPA says the overall quality of drinking water supplied by private group water schemes remains unsatisfactory.
Such schemes serve around 50,000 households in rural areas.
