A 20-year-old west Belfast man who has variant CJD is no longer regarded as being terminally ill.
Jonathan Simms was diagnosed with the brain wasting disease three years ago and is the longest known survivor.
He has been treated with a blood thinning drug called Pentosan Polysulphate, which had previously only been tested on animals.
His father, Don Simms, discovered its existence while researching on the Internet.
Mr Simms had won landmark legal battles in the High Courts in Belfast and London to use the drug.
