DUP meeting with Ahern in doubt again

Ian Paisley - Meeting in doubt

The DUP Leader, Ian Paisley, said tonight that once the Taoiseach had apologised in the Dáil tomorrow his party would meet the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern.

However, this afternoon Dr Paisley repeated there would be no turning back on their demand for photographic evidence of decommissioning of IRA weapons.

He was speaking after meeting British Prime Minister Tony Blair in Downing Street.

But a spokeswoman for the Taoiseach has said Mr Ahern would not be repeating his apology when he speaks in the Dáil tomorrow.

In a phone call yesterday he had apologised to the DUP leader for remarks he made dismissing the workability of photographic verification of IRA decommissioning.

She said Mr Ahern would be outlining the Government's position but would not be reading the apology into the Dáil record.

Accordingly, the scheduled meeting between the DUP leader and the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Stormont tomorrow is again in doubt.

Earlier, the DUP's Ian Paisley Jr said he was pessimistic that a deal on the North's political future could be struck this week.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Mr Paisley said he could not understand the difficulty that republicans had with clarity on decommissioning.
