A senior African Union official has warned that repeated violations in ceasefire agreements are damaging an already fragile peace process in Sudan's Darfur region.
The Sudanese government and rebels from the western region are engaged in peace talks in Nigeria aimed at finding a political solution to the conflict in Darfur that has claimed at least 70,000 lives and displaced more than 2 million more.
Sam Ibok, the chairperson of the African Union-sponsored talks in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, has said that he hopes sanctions can be introduced to punish those who violate cease-fire agreements.
Earlier this week, the US said that international efforts to tackle the crisis were ‘getting nowhere’.
