Sudan's government has said it hopes to reach a deal in talks resuming tomorrow with rebels in Darfur, which the UN says is descending into chaos.

Rebels of the Justice and Equality Movement say they will attend the talks in the Nigerian capital Abuja but accused Khartoum of launching fresh attacks in the Darfur region in western Sudan.

The Sudan Liberation Army, the other main Darfur rebel group, has also accused the government of increasing attacks in Darfur ahead of the talks.

UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, said this week that Darfur was in chaos, plagued by banditry, rape and village burnings, with 2.3 million people in desperate need of aid.

The United States said international efforts had failed to stop the violence.

US Ambassador to the United Nations, John Danforth, said all sides were to blame for the crisis.
