The Minister for Communications, Noel Dempsey, has offered to meet the board of An Post and the Communications Workers' Union next week to discuss a resolution to the current industrial unrest at the company.

The CWU says an escalation of the postal dispute is likely unless staff get the money due to them under the national pay deal.

Up to 7,000 postal workers took part in a protest rally today to demand the increases due to them since November of last year.

The strike led to the closure of An Post offices throughout the country and there was no delivery of post today.

A total of 93 offices run directly by An Post were closed. Sub-post offices which are not directly staffed by An Post operated as normal.

The company disputes the CWU's allegations and says the strike is in breach of procedures.

Tomorrow morning the executive of the CWU will meet to consider its next move.
