At least seven people are reported to have been killed and more than 50 others injured in twin suicide car bombings in Baghdad.

The simultaneous explosions happened outside a police station near the complex which houses the US Embassy and Iraq's interim administration.

Witnesses said they saw a pick-up truck being driven towards the police station.

The building is next to a checkpoint leading into the heavily-fortified Green Zone.

Earlier, an official at the US Embassy housed inside the complex said no US nationals were killed or wounded in the blast.

On Friday, insurgents mortared and then stormed a police station near Baghdad Airport, killing at least 11 officers and setting free around 50 prisoners held at the jail.

Earlier this week, a police station in a remote part of western Iraq was attacked and 12 police officers killed.
