European commissioners have been advised to ‘put themselves about a bit’ in order to promote the benefits of the new European Constitution.

The Taoiseach told the Dáil he had spoken to Commission President José Manuel Barroso about the matter, and suggested it would be helpful to have commissioners more visible in Ireland, and in other member states.

Bertie Ahern said there had been no date fixed for the referendum in Ireland on the constitution, but that information was already being delivered to citizens about it.

He also said that while he hoped the UK adopts the euro, Ireland gets a lot of business as a result of it not joining, adding that assets worth €262bn were being managed in the IFSC, only €80bn of which was owned by Irish residents.
