The Colombian defence secretary has said the country's FARC guerrilla group targeted the US president, George W Bush, for assassination on a visit to the port city of Cartagena last week.
The FARC group accuses the US of backing business interests in Colombia and ignoring the 60% of the population living in poverty.
Mr Bush was visiting the Colombian president, Alvaro Uribe, who is considered a strong US ally in the fight against drugs trafficking and global terrorism.
Neither the Colombian government nor the US Secret Service have released further details about the assassination plot.
