Kofi Annan has said the situation in the Darfur region of western Sudan is continuing to deteriorate and this cannot be allowed to continue.

Addressing the UN Security Council at an extraordinary meeting in Nairobi, the organisation's Secretary General said both the Sudanese government and rebel groups were violating agreements.

The two-day meeting in the Kenyan capital is being held to discuss the crisis in Sudan.

It is only the third time in 50 years that the UNSC has left its New York headquarters.

The 15-member body is focussing on attempts to end the 21-year-old civil war between the broadly Muslim north and the Christian south of the country.
