The European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly to approve the new European Commission.

The incoming President of the Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, was forced to withdraw his nominees last month when Parliament opposed the controversial Italian politician, Rocco Buttiglione, as Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner.

Parliament voted by 449 to 149 with 82 abstentions to approve the new Commission, which will take office next Monday.

Mr Barroso told MEPs that he made what he called sensible and necessary changes, including replacing Mr Buttiglione with the former Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini.
