Two members of the Palestinian security services have been killed in a shooting incident as PLO leader, Mahmud Abbas, visited a mourning tent at late leader Yasser Arafat's Gaza City headquarters.
Four other people were wounded in the incident, although Abbas himself was unharmed.
Abbas had just arrived at the Muntada base to receive condolences for Arafat who died in hospital on the outskirts of Paris on Thursday.
Witnesses said that more than a thousand people, many of whom were armed, were in the tent at the time of the shooting.
The gunfire triggered scenes of panic as people fled the scene.
Meanwhile, elections to choose a successor to the former Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, are to be held on 9 January.
A caretaker collective leadership has been in place in the Palestinian Authority since Mr Arafat's death.
The head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and former prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas, has been chosen by the dominant Fatah faction to run as its candidate.
