Palestinian leaders have called for a speedy resumption of peace efforts with Israel, a day after Yasser Arafat's burial in Ramallah.

Palestinian Prime Minister, Ahmed Qurei, also said there would be an election to replace Mr Arafat by 9 January.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has said the creation of a Palestinian State is the solution to the Middle Eastern problem.

Bertie Ahern was speaking as he signed a Book of Condolence for Yasser Arafat at the Mansion House in Dublin.

Mr Ahern added that the Irish Government and the EU fully supported the creation of a Palestinian State which he believed could come about in the next four to five years.
