There have been widespread tributes for the former England and Liverpool football captain and television personality, Emlyn Hughes, whose death was announced this morning.

57-year-old Hughes was diagnosed with a brain tumour 15 months ago. His condition deteriorated in the last few days and he died at his home in Sheffield.

Hughes played 650 games for Liverpool, helping the club to four league titles. He also won 62 England caps, captaining his country 23 times.

He was also a regular panellist on the BBC programme, A Question of Sport.

Rick Parry, chief executive of Liverpool Football Club, said, 'Our deepest sympathies go out to wife Barbara, children Emma and Emlyn junior, and the rest of the family at this sad time.'

The club confirmed it will hold one minute's silence before Wednesday's Carling Cup tie against Middlesbrough at Anfield.
