Afghan militants who claim to be holding three United Nations workers hostage have scaled back demands for their release.

The kidnappers had been seeking the release of Taliban prisoners, the withdrawal of US troops and the suspension of UN operations in the country.

Today, a spokesman for the group said they had supplied Afghan government officials with a list of 26 Taliban prisoners they want freed.

The militants said they would give the government until Tuesday to meet their demand, which is reported to have been made during a two-hour meeting.

Annetta Flanigan from Co Armagh is one of the three UN workers being held hostage.

A relative of another hostage, from Kosovo, earlier made a televised appeal for her release describing her as a Muslim who arrived in Afghanistan to help the people there.

Similar appeals have been issued by relatives of Ms Flanigan and the other captive, a Filipino diplomat.

They were all kidnapped in the Afghan capital, Kabul, last week while monitoring the country's presidential election.
