It is reported that the group in Afghanistan holding three kidnapped UN workers hostage has denied it is extending its deadline for the US military to release Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners.

The group has said it would otherwise kill the hostages, including Annetta Flanigan from Richhill in Co Armagh.

Earlier, the Afghan Defence Ministry claimed that Friday would be the new deadline, but the group has denied this.

The ministry also said the three UN employees had been split up to thwart a rescue attempt.
