No agreement reached on Sudan security

The Sudanese government and rebels in Darfur have failed to agree on a security protocol that would restart talks to end the conflict in the region.

Both sides met with African Union mediators in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, to try to resolve differences over disarming Janjaweed militias and protecting civilians.

The draft security proposal requires Sudan to make good on pledges to disarm the militias and identify any other militant groups it has been supporting.

The document also calls on both sides to co-operate with the African Union ceasefire commission and reveal where their forces are located.

The talks are expected to reconvene today in a bid to end the conflict in Darfur that has driven 1.5 million people from their homes.
