A senior United Nations official has warned that no solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be found without urgent international involvement.
In an address to the UN Security Council, Kieran Prendergast spoke of a sense of foreboding as the Palestinian territories drifted towards chaos.
Mr Prendergast said the Palestinian authority had to make all efforts to stop rocket attacks on Israeli citizens.
He also called on the Israelis to refrain from the disproportionate force used during a two-week offensive in northern Gaza that killed 114 Palestinians, including women and children.
