The death toll from a coalmine disaster in China has risen to 64, and hopes are fading that any survivors will be found among another 84 workers who are missing.

The accident, which happened in the central province of Henan, is one of the country’s worst in years.

About 150 workers were trapped when a gas explosion caused part of the mine's roof to collapse.

300 other workers who were in the Daping mine when a spike in gas levels was first discovered late on Wednesday managed to escape.
