Lawyers to watch polling in US election

Thousands of lawyers are preparing to monitor polling in the US presidential election in less than two weeks' time.

The deployment, by both Republicans and Democrats, stems from the election result in 2000 which was delayed for five weeks amid bitter legal disputes over ballot recounts in Florida.

Most lawyers and independent observers will be in place in the key swing states, including Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Lawsuits are already being filed ahead of the poll on 2 November.

One of the most serious problems is in Ohio where a dispute has arisen over how to count provisional ballots when voters turn up at the wrong polling station.
