Humanitarian crisis in northern Uganda

The UN Emergency Relief Co-ordinator, Jan Egeland, has said more international attention needs to be paid to a serious humanitarian crisis in northern Uganda.

Mr Egeland said rebels from a group known as the Lord's Resistance Army had used children as fighters and sex slaves since the conflict began in 1986.

Mr Egeland said that in 18 years the conflict has caused the deaths of over 100,000 and the displacement of 1.6 million people.

This number is higher than the numbers displaced in the Darfur region of neighbouring Sudan.
