The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, has announced there will be no increase in the height of the Dublin Port Tunnel.
In a statement today, Mr Cullen said the decision was based 'primarily on safety grounds'.
Hauliers have said they are disappointed with the decision. They had been campaigning to have the height increased to accommodate new taller trucks.
The minister said the department would shortly be publishing proposals in relation to the imposition of maximum height for vehicles in Ireland.
The decision has been criticised by a leading member of the Progressive Democrats.
Senator Tom Morrissey, the chairman of the PD Parliamentary Party, claimed the decision was ‘anti-competitive’ and would lead to increased costs for Irish businesses and consumers.
