The Northern Secretary, Paul Murphy, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, have held talks in Dublin.
Afterwards, Mr Murphy said there still were some difficult issues to be resolved to try to break the impasse in the Northern peace process.
However, he added that all the parties were working hard behind the scenes to try to make the breakthrough.
Mr Ahern said the issue of decommissioning is among the outstanding difficulties.
