Nevitt residents to fight landfill plan

Residents living in the area chosen as the site for the country's biggest ever dump, say they intend to fight the plan all the way, and use every single avenue open to them to do so.

Members of the Nevitt-Lusk Action Group addressed a special meeting of Fingal County Council this afternoon.

Nevitt, 12 kilometres north of Swords, has been identified by consultants as the preferred location for a new landfill dump for Dublin.

Fingal County Council says Dublin will have nowhere to dump its rubbish by 2009 and the county badly needs a new landfill.

However, the residents, eight of whom stand to lose their homes if the plan goes ahead, say a landfill would be a catastrophe for the area.

An environmental impact assessment on the area is due to be completed by May 2005.
