Relatives of patients at the Mater Hospital in Dublin have staged a protest about waiting times for admission from the accident and emergency department.

The protestors say many people have been on trolleys in the A&E for several days. Tonight the Mater hospital confirmed that 20 people are awaiting admission from the unit.

Hospital management said while it regretted the situation, it was part of an ongoing problem of bed shortages at the Mater.

The hospital repeated calls for at least 100 extra beds to be opened.

The protestors said they are increasingly concerned for the wellbeing of patients.
