Cross-border patient in stable condition

The woman who had to be brought across the border because no intensive care beds could be found in the Republic, is in a stable condition according to a spokesperson for the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen.

The woman is believed to have suffered a perforated bowel.

She was a patient of Monaghan General Hospital, but they were unable to carry out the surgery as was Cavan General Hospital or Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Two hospitals in the capital were also unable to assist, as they did not have an ICU bed available.

Local TD and hospital campaigner, Paudge Connolly, said the situation underlined the need for the rapid return of services to Monaghan General Hospital.
