UN's Annan in Dublin for three-day visit

The United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has arrived in Dublin ahead of an address he will make to the National Forum on Europe at Dublin Castle tomorrow.

Mr Annan arrived at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park , where he will be staying during his visit. He was greeted, upon his arrival, by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern. 

During his visit he is expected to put forward the concept of troops from EU countries being used in military groups for security and peacekeeping duties in trouble spots throughout the world.

His agenda includes a visit to Áras an Uachtaráin where he will meet President Mary McAleese. Mr Annan is also expected to address Irish soldiers who served on UN peacekeeping missions at McKee Barracks in Dublin.

His three-day visit will conclude with a working lunch with the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, on Saturday.
