Crumlin - Two patients sent home

The Tánaiste and Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has spoken to the chief executive of Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin on the deferral of operations at the hospital.

The hospital sent home two children two days ago when their heart surgery was cancelled because of a shortage of intensive care nurses.

A spokesperson for Ms Harney said this afternoon the hospital has assured her that there is no issue about a refusal to pay overtime to ensure heart operations for children can take place as planned.

Earlier, Ms Harney appealed to Opposition parties not to play politics with the deferral of the cardiac operations.

The Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, called on the minister to intervene.

In a statement, the Labour Party's Spokesperson on Health, Liz McManus, said Ms Harney must address, among other matters, the chronic staff shortages there.

The hospital had expressed regret for being forced to send home the two patients.

It referred to the shortage of intensive care nurses and said it had to accommodate other patients needing emergency treatment.

Meanwhile, the President of the INO has called on Ms Harney to take immediate action on nurses' pay to avoid the cancellation of critical heart operations on children in the coming months.

Madeline Spiers was addressing a nurses' conference in Tullamore.
