Students who appealed against the results of their Leaving Certificate examinations have been finding out today whether or not they have received upgrades.
The State Examinations Commission has released the results of more than 10,000 appeals that were lodged. Just over 2,000 results were upgraded, while seven candidates had their marks decreased.
Under the appeals process, papers are fully re-marked by a different examiner. This year, one in five Leaving Cert students have had their results upgraded.
Honours English topped the list of subjects that were appealed this year. Just under 2,000 students queried these results and more than 300 of them were upgraded as a result.
Appeals were also high in honours Irish and Maths, with around one quarter and one tenth of candidates respectively given upgrades. Other papers with a high number of appeals include honours Geography, French, History and Physics.
The appeals system is also used as a quality assurance check on the original marking. This year, upgrades were given to 16 candidates who had not applied to have their papers rechecked.
