The company building a house for the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, in Co Roscommon has taken issue with the claim that the building has not been constructed in accordance with planning regulations.

Griffner Coillte has told RTÉ News that Roscommon County Council had been informed of the different floor levels several months ago, and that no issue had been made of this.

The company says it hopes to continue talks with council officials to avoid Mr McDowell having to re-apply for planning permission to retain the house.

The council originally granted permission for the house to be built on the site at Carranadoe in July 1999, and construction work subsequently began.

On 13 August, the council received an application for a three-month extension to the five-year life of the planning permission so the house could be completed.

However, the council deemed that, because the house was different in external finish and in relation to floor levels that are 2m lower than originally approved, an extension could not be granted.
