Strike over oil price rise in Nigeria

A four-day national strike is taking place in Nigeria in protest at a 25% increase in the cost of oil.

Oil executives in Nigeria said they were confident there would be no immediate disruption to exports.

However, the largest trade union grouping in the country, the Nigeria Labour Congress, said the protest would be followed by another strike if the government refuses to reverse the price increase.

The Nigeria Labour Congress says the increases caused by the phasing out of fuel subsidies are impoverishing the country's people. Nigeria is Africa's largest oil exporter.
