Venezuela has announced a 16-point increase in the royalties payable by foreign oil companies operating in one of its richest oil fields.
The tax on companies drilling in the southern Orinoco region will rise from 1% to almost 17%.
Announcing the move, President Hugo Chavez said it was an act of justice and a step towards full sovereignty over the country's oil.
