The Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, claimed victory in the general election, shortly after the Labour opposition leader, Mark Latham, conceded defeat.

The victory gives Mr Howard his fourth conservative government term in office.

The final official result is expected later.

During the campaign, Mr Howard said he would keep Australian troops in Iraq.

The Labour Party said they would bring them home before the end of the year.
