Conditions on board the Canadian submarine drifting off the northwest coast are said to be improving.

A tug has taken the submarine in tow with a view to bringing it  to the Faslane naval base on the Scottish coast from which it set out on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a crewman from the submarine is in a critical condition in Sligo General Hospital. Another crewman is said to be in a stable condition at the hospital. Both men, who are suffering from smoke inhalation, are receiving oxygen support.

The Canadian Ambassador to Dublin, Mark Moher, visited the two men in hospital this afternoon.

A third crewman, 32-year-old Lieutenant Chris Saunders, had died from his injuries when he arrived at the hospital last night.

Canada's Prime Minister, Paul Martin, and opposition leaders in the Canadian Parliament have paid tributes to Lt Saunders, who was married with two children. The State Pathologist is to carry out a post mortem on his body tomorrow.

Earlier, partial power was restored to improve conditions within the submarine, where the remaining 54 crew are still on board.

The Minister of State for the Marine, Pat the Cope Gallagher, said any questions about why it took 24 hours to airlift the three men to hospital should be directed at the British authorities.

He said the vessel was in their search and rescue zone when the alert began.
