Gaza - Israeli operations continue

The UN Secretary General Secretary, Kofi Annan, has called on Israel to end its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Ten people, including three teenagers and a deaf man, were killed today.

Mr Annan also called on the Palestinian Authority to take action against Palestinian militants firing rockets at Israeli targets which prompted the Israeli action.

Earlier the Prime Minister Ariel Sharon vowed to press on with the offensive.

Meanwhile, Iran has accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip and called for international intervention to halt the latest operation.

Palestinian negotiations minister Saeb Erekat said the lack of international reaction to the Israeli onslaught in Gaza was encouraging Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to continue it.

More than 60 people have been killed, most of them Palestinians, since nearly 100 tanks backed by aircraft moved into northern Gaza in an operation called 'Days of Penitence'.

Washington on Friday called on Israel to use 'only proportional
force' in its ongoing military operations in Gaza.

Israel launched the incursion in a bid to prevent rocket attacks by Palestinian militants.

Mr Sharon vowed today to press ahead with the operation.

Yesterday, French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier expressed
concern about the situation and appealed to both Israel and the
Palestinians to end the violence.
