A security alert is continuing at Stanstead Airport, where a Greek airliner landed after a bomb threat this afternoon.

Police say specialist search teams have not been on board the plane and officers were working methodically to check a  substantial amount of hold baggage and five tons of cargo which the plane was carrying.

The Olympic Airlines flight was en route from Athens to New York when it was diverted.

British RAF planes escorted the aircraft to Stansted Airport after receiving the threat.

A spokeswoman for London's Stansted airport, where the plane made an emergency landing, said all 301 passengers were evacuated safely.

One report said the alert began after three anonymous calls to a Greek newspaper.
