The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Ruud Lubbers, has suggested the Sudanese government should grant more autonomy to the troubled Darfur region in an effort to end the violence there.

Mr Lubbers was speaking during a visit to the region, where pro-government Arab militias have carried out a campaign against rebels and non-Arab minorities over the past 18 months.

The UN estimates that since the conflict began some 50,000 people have been killed, and over one million displaced.
