The United Nations Security Council has told Sudan that it could face sanctions on its oil exports if it fails to prevent further violence by Arab militias in the western region of Darfur.
Eleven countries voted in favour of the resolution and four abstained, including China.
The UN resolution also calls for a commission to investigate whether atrocities carried out against black African villagers amounts to genocide.
Sudan has said the demands are unfair but it will comply with them.
The US ambassador to the UN, John Danforth, said the time had come for Sudanese leaders to match their promises with action.
