A major cross-border advertising campaign aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of waste management has been launched by Irish and British ministers.
The €2.5 million initiative, funded by the EU, was unveiled at Killadeas near Enniskillen in Co Fermanagh by the Minister for the Environment, Martin Cullen, and his Northern counterpart Angela Smith.
They stressed the importance of reducing, recycling and reusing waste at a conference of delegates from the waste industry, community groups and local councils from the 12 border counties.
Ms Smith said it was essential both governments worked in an effective manner to ensure that solutions were found for common waste problems.
She said the campaign was timely and its focus appropriate, as cross-border dumping had become an increasing problem.
Since the launch of the Northern Ireland Wake Up To Waste campaign in 2002, waste recycling rates have improved steadily from 6.6% in 2000 to over 12% in 2003.
