Over 30 people have been killed in a day of heavy fighting in Iraq.

Reports say up to 13 civilians were killed when an American helicopter launched a rocket attack to destroy an US armoured personnel carrier that had been disabled in Baghdad.

Elsewhere in the city there was a series of separate car bombimgs and mortar attacks as well as a suicide bomb attack on the Abu Ghrieb prison which left nine people dead.

In one of the heaviest barrages in the capital for months, insurgents fired more than a dozen mortars around the Green Zone compound housing the US and other embassies and Iraq's interim government.

In the town of Ramadi it was reported that 10 people died in fighting while in the central Iraqi town of Hilla, three Polish soldiers were killed in an attack on their patrol.
