A date has been set for the Presidential election, if one is necessary.

Voting will take place on 22 October, if more than one candidate is nominated.

Nominations have to be in by 1 October.

President McAleese is expected to make an announcement about whether or not she will stand in the coming weeks.

The former MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon is also understood to be considering seeking a nomination.
