Israel accused of thwarting peace efforts

The Palestinian Foreign Minister, Nabil Sha'ath, has accused Israel of trying to thwart efforts to restore calm in the Middle East.

The criticism followed an Israeli attack in Gaza City in which 14 people were killed and around 20 wounded.

The Israeli military said the attack was directed at a training camp for Hamas militants.

It said Hamas members had been learning to make suicide belts, plant explosives, launch rockets, infiltrate Jewish settlements and kidnap soldiers and civilians.

Israel had pledged a harsh response to last week's double suicide bus bombing in the southern city of Beersheba, in which 16 people lost their lives.
