The Iraqi government has extended a ban on the Arab television station, Al-Jazeera.

In a statement, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi, said Al-Jazeera had not complied with a temporary order issued last month which prohibited the station from broadcasting on grounds that it incited racial hatred.

Mr Allawi said the station had continued to broadcast from within Iraq despite the closure order.

An Al-Jazeera spokesman described the decision as outrageous and thwarted press freedom.
