The former US President, Bill Clinton, is to undergo heart bypass surgery at a New York City hospital early next week.

Mr Clinton, 58, was admitted to hospital yesterday after complaining of chest pain and fatigue.

In an interview, he said he felt lucky and joked that he wants 'four more years' to live, referring to the presidential term of office.

The US President, George W Bush, called Mr Clinton to wish him a speedy recovery.

Mr Clinton's wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, cancelled her appointments to be with her husband.
