On the second day of talks at Stormont, Martin McGuinness said it is an absolute certainty that some day Sinn Féin and the DUP will sit together and build a future for all the people.
But the DUP leader, Ian Paisley, said the IRA must be finished with once and for all and that Sinn Féin must become a new party.
Negotiations got off to a difficult start yesterday when the DUP leader, Ian Paisley, said there could be no negotiations until the IRA issue was dealt with.
78-year-old Mr Paisley also rounded on journalists who asked about his recent illness.
Jonathan Powell, British Prime Minister Tony Blair's Chief of Staff, had travelled to Belfast yesterday but had no consultations with the DUP even though contact was made in advance of his arrival.
